The new Marantz SA-10 player is the latest addition to Marantz's quality high-end CD player selection, which dates back to 1983 when Marantz's first premium CD player, the CD-63, was launched. The SA-10 sets new standards for how music plays from a record or when streaming from a computer. To achieve this, the SA-10 has been completely redesigned down to the components with the goal of getting the most out of digital audio formats.
The SA-10 is therefore a first-class CD and SACD player, but also a high-end level dac that can read high-resolution audio from discs burned by computers.
According to Marantz, the result of long-term research, development and listening sessions, the SA-10 redefines the Marantz philosophy 'Because Music Matters'.
It all starts with the disc
It starts with the disc. When playing an SA-CD, CD or data disc with the player, it is important that the player reads the disc with unerring accuracy, because when playing music in real time there is no room for disc reading errors.
Many modern CD and SACD players use disc readers designed for computers because they are readily available, inexpensive and versatile. High-quality disc readers made purely for reading CD and SACD discs are significantly more difficult to make and find.
The SACD-M3 disc reader, designed and manufactured by Marantz, is specially made for the SA-10 player for the best possible end result. In addition to this, the SACD-M3 can read FLAC files from DVD-ROM disc 32kHz up to 192kHz and 24 bit, DSD64, DSD128, ALAC, AIFF and MP3 files.
The SA-10 is also a high-quality dac converter for e.g. music stored on a computer and has digital inputs, optical and coaxial, which always receive 192kHz/24bit audio. The SA-10 player also has a USB-B synchronized input, which is capable of receiving audio PCM and DXD audio files up to 384kHz/32bit as well as DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 files. The entire digital input side of the device is completely interference-proof. In other words, the SA-10 instrument is capable of functioning well into the future.
DSD benefit
Marantz has long been an advocate of the DSD format. DSD was originally developed to work as a Super Audio CD format, and Marantz is one of the first equipment manufacturers to bring SA-CD players to the market, starting with the SA-1 player in 2001. Today, there is plenty of CD-level material upscaled to DSD files, which requires dac devices equipped with DSD support.
Marantz Musical Mastering
DSD is therefore the SA-10 device's way of processing digital audio: PCM and DXD inputs are converted to DSD 11.2MHz using the SA-10's Marantz Musical MAster (MMM) streaming conversion applied to this.
In other words, the incoming digital audio is filtered and converted by Marantz's own developed MMM conversion processor.
The same conversion method is also used in the Marantz SA-11 SACD player and the NA-11 network player, although the SA-10 player uses a higher sampling frequency, thanks to the DSD11.2 conversion.
The SA-10 player uses two system clocks for the incoming digital signal, whether it came from a disc or the digital inputs: 44.1kHz, 88.2kHz, etc. of CDs are converted to 11.2896kHz, while 48kHz, etc. are converted to 12.288kHz.
The reason why Marantz has designed its own key technology into the instrument is simply because the sound was not clean and precise enough with other manufacturers' components.
This led, for example, to the creation of the HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules) filter component.
Made to shine
The SA-10 player, like the integrated stereo amplifier PM-10 of the same series, is made of top materials, hand-selected components, a double-reinforced copper frame, which, thanks to its insulating properties, effectively isolates the effect of all mechanical and electronic interference on the sound.
