The MC1502 vacuum tube amplifier is a stereo amplifier designed for home amplifiers and home music systems, producing 150 watts per channel. It is a direct replacement for the award-winning McIntosh MC2152 Limited Edition 70th Anniversary tube amplifier, which was released to celebrate the 70th anniversary in 2019. The new MC1502 has identical sound information and sound reproduction performance to the MC2152, but with a more standard McIntosh design.
The MC1502 shares the timeless design style of the already classic MC275 amplifier. Since the MC1502 has twice the power rating (150w vs. 75w) of the MC275 and is physically larger, it can be considered the MC275's big brother in many ways. Although a pair of MC275s can be used as one to achieve 150 watts per channel, the MC1502 still has a better signal-to-noise ratio (112dB vs. 105db).
Four of the amplifier's eight KT-88 output tubes are assigned to each stereo channel. It also has eight small signal tubes consisting of four 12AX7A and four 12AT7 tubes. Two of these pipes are dedicated to each audio channel. 12AX7A tubes are for balanced and input amplifiers, while 12AT7 tubes are for voltage and control amplifiers. The vacuum tubes can be covered with a stainless steel cage with a black finish.
The bottom of the KT88 tubes has Air-Pipe cooling to ensure a long service life. The eight signal pipe connectors have a ceramic base structure and gold-plated contacts to protect against contamination.
All tubes sit on top of a precisely shaped and polished stainless steel frame. Sentry Monitor technology monitors the output current and shuts down the amplifier if it ever exceeds safe limits. If the Sentry Monitor is ever activated, the signal pipes will flash red.
Unlike many other amplifiers, the MC1502's full 150 watts can be delivered to almost any pair of speakers, whether their impedance is 2, 4 or 8 ohms. The amplifier's two Unity Coupled Circuit transformers flank the power transformer placed between them.
Both balanced and unbalanced inputs are included for connecting the MC1502 to a preamp and other audio system. Patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts securely connect speaker cables to speakers. McIntosh's Power Control technology input and output allow other connected McIntosh components such as preamplifiers, CD players, turntables or media players to automatically turn on and off.
