Immerse yourself in music with the McIntosh MCD85 CD/SACD player, which also serves as a reference-level DA converter for your other digital audio sources. Following McIntosh's new compact form language, the MCD85 is not only a serious part of your music equipment. It also shows how passionate you are about music. Based on the great success of McIntosh's equally retro-inspired MC275 and MC1502 tube amplifiers and MA252 and MA352 integrated amplifiers, as well as the warm reception of the newly introduced MC830 mono-ended and C8 tube preamps, it's clear how many people want their home stereo system to not just disappear into the interior, but instead, would stand out from it. So tell your friends that "a real music lover lives in this home". The MCD85 tells you that and much more.
The MCD85 plays store-bought SACDs and CDs, as well as music files from home-recorded CDs and DVDs. These discs can play numerous file formats including AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD (up to DSD128), FLAC, MP3, WAV and WMA. The USB audio input supports up to DSD256 and DXD 384 kHz resolutions and can be used to stream digital music from a computer or in the highest quality possible from Melco's music library. There are also two coaxial and two optical digital inputs that support PCM signals up to 192 kHz resolution.
The data from the discs and the digital music stream from the files are converted to an analog signal for amplification by a quad-balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit / 192 kHz DA converter. Four converter channels are dedicated to the left and four to the right audio channel to ensure exceptional performance and noise-free performance.
Both balanced XLR and traditional RCA outputs enable connection to all amplifiers. The narrower width allows the player to be installed close to the listening position for easier loading of discs, and thanks to the XLR outputs, cable runs can be very long without degrading the signal quality.
The MCD85 reads discs at double speed, which means that all the music placed in its supportive die-cast metal carriage is loaded into buffer memory for more accurate correction of any errors on the disc. The slide has a chamfered front part that fits neatly into the front corner of the case. The slide's fair range of motion enables easy placement and removal of the disc. An exceptionally sturdy mechanism ensures quiet operation. Disc reading is performed with a high-quality double laser reader head, which uses one lens with two separate laser units, which are optimized for SACD and CD playback with their own wavelengths. Versatile power management and external control connections enable seamless integration with other McIntosh components.
A die-cast aluminum nameplate is affixed to both sides of the frame. The bottom of the body is polished to a stunning deep mirror - just like the MC275, MC1502, MA252, MA352, MC830 and C8 models mentioned above, making the MCD85 a welcome companion to any system using these models, but why not others where the primary the goal is great musical enjoyment. Of course, the MCD85 also has McIntosh's signature black glass front panel with a stylish and durable LED backlight, a silver border, and comfortable-to-feel control knobs.
