The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition (Rega Special) is built using an all-new aluminium metal HPL laminate, creating the stiffest platform we've ever produced for a Planar 3. This stunning dark brushed metal platform with high-gloss black edges provides a stunning foundation for the iconic Planar 3. The RS Edition features a custom-tuned Neo MK2 PSU, with each motor's vibration circuit fine-tuned on a motor-by-motor basis. A low-noise 24V motor drives the platter via a Reference EBLT drive belt, ensuring extremely precise speed control. Finishing off, the legendary, hand-crafted RB330 tonearm is fitted and equipped with an all-new award-winning Nd5 moving magnet cartridge.
Rega has been a pioneer in the use of lightweight, highly rigid chassis for many years. The combination of a lightweight particleboard core and a highly rigid phenolic resin surface became the foundation for the performance achieved by the iconic original Planar series.
The new Planar 3 RS Edition takes this design philosophy to the next level by using high-pressure laminate (HPL), previously only used on the Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10, for added rigidity. This premium HPL is finished in a stunning brushed dark aluminum metallic finish with a beautiful satin finish. Additionally, a dual bracing system is installed at critical points where greater rigidity is needed (between the tonearm mount and the main bearing). This creates a structurally solid “stress beam.”
This complex frame structure prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances that could add unnatural distortion to the music. At the same time, a heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise, directly to the rotating platter. The use of stiffeners allows for the addition of a double layer of phenolic resin at critical points, which directly counteracts energy absorption and unwanted energy transfer caused by the mass.
